Abraham: The Promised Son

Genesis 21:1–21

The faith of Abraham was in the Lord who promised a son.

  1. The Lord provided a son - 1–2
    1. The son was provided according to the word of the Lord - Genesis 18:14; Romans 9:9 For this is the word of promise: "AT THIS TIME I WILL COME, AND SARAH SHALL HAVE A SON."
    2. Sarah bore a miraculous son - Hebrews 11:11 By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.
    3. Abraham believed in the promised son - Romans 4:20–21 He did not waver at the promise of God through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God, and being fully convinced that what He had promised He was also able to perform.
  1. Abraham’s obedient response to the promised son - 3–4
    1. Abraham named his son Isaac (he laughs) - Genesis 17:17–19
    2. Abraham circumcised Isaac as God had commanded him.
  1. Abraham and Sarah rejoice in the promised son - 5–7
    1. Abraham was one hundred years old and Sarah was ninety years old.
    2. Sarah’s doubting laughter was transformed into a joyous faith.
    3. Sarah’s life was transformed by the birth of Isaac.

Abraham has become the father of a multitude who have trusted in the promised Son!

Sarah has become the princess of a nation who have trusted in the promised Son!

Brother and sister, we rejoice in faith in the Lord Jesus Christ the promised Son!

Romans 4:16 Therefore it is of faith that it might be according to grace, so that the promise might be sure to all the seed, not only to those who are of the law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all
