Abraham: Victory and Blessing

Genesis 14:1–24

There was a different result between Lot’s choice and God’s blessing.

  1. Abraham gained the victory - 1–16
    1. The world wars against itself. There is constant warfare between the nations of the earth - James 4:1–4
    2. Lot was tangled up with Sodom and fell in defeat along with Sodom.
    3. Abraham is first distinguished as a Hebrew.
    4. Abraham and his allies did not take part in the war.
    5. Abraham was dwelling in Hebron (fellowship) in peace.
    6. Abraham entered the war to rescue Lot.
    7. Abraham was victorious against his enemies.
  1. Abraham pursued the blessing - 17–24
    1. Two kings presented themselves before Abraham:
      1. Melchizedek (king of righteousness) was the king of Salem (peace) and the priest of God Most High who blessed Abraham.
        1. He brought out bread and wine to give to Abraham.
        2. He blessed Abraham by the God Most High.
        3. He blessed the God Most High.
      2. The king of Sodom tried to make a bargain Abraham.
        1. He came out in his selfishness to get from Abraham.
        2. He demanded (give me) the souls as if they were his.
        3. He offered the possessions as if they were his payment.
    2. Abraham gave a tenth of all to Melchizedek.
      1. He accepted the blessing because he was a priest - Psalm 110:4
      2. He recognized that Melchizedek was a king - Hebrews 7:1–10
      3. Melchizedek was a type of Christ - Hebrews 7:11–28
    3. Abraham refused to accept and recognize the offer of the king of Sodom thereby attributing all of his wealth and well-being to Lord alone.

The greatest threat to Abraham was not the mighty armies but the subtle threat that he would give the king of Sodom the credit and not the Lord. That he would take the bounty over the blessing

God has promised to give us the victory and blessing in Christ.

Brother and sister do not exchange the victory and blessing in Christ for worldly benefits.

And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen. Philippians 4:19–20
