Bible Text: Romans 3:1-8 | Series:

Arguing with God

Romans 3:1–8

The righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel of Christ - Romans 1:16–17

  • God’s righteousness is not revealed in mankind - Romans 1:18-32 (v. 1:18)
  • God’s righteousness is not revealed in the Jews - Romans 2:1-16 (v. 2:1)
  • God’s righteousness is not revealed in the law - Romans 2:17-24 (v. 2:23)
  • God’s righteousness is not revealed in circumcision - Romans 2:25-19 (v. 2:25)
  • God’s righteousness IS revealed through faith in Jesus Christ - Romans 3:21-26

The apostle Paul has carefully argued that all are sinners and all deserve judgment. The only way to be saved and be right with God is found in the gospel of Christ. The sinner cannot accept this so in irrational desperation they blame God for their judgment.

1 - If God says that being a Jew does not make one right before God than why does anything matter at all?

2 - Being a Jew does have advantages (Romans 9:1–5). The first and most important advantage is that God has given to them His word - Hebrews 1:1–2

3 - God has made promises to save Israel and if Israel rejects the gospel and is lost then God does not keep His promises.

4 - Never charge God with unrighteousness! God’s judgments are always right and man’s judgments are always wrong. God will be vindicated - Psalm 51:1–4

5 - If Jews are unrighteous according to the law then that makes God unrighteous to judge because they are unable to be righteous.

6 - Never charge God with unrighteousness! There will be no exceptions, God is right to judge all sin and all sinners - Genesis 18:25 Far be it from You to do such a thing as this, to slay the righteous with the wicked, so that the righteous should be as the wicked; far be it from You! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?"

7–8a - God is certainly glorified through the salvation of sinners but it is malicious to conclude that our sinfulness is actually excused by God.

8b - Slandering the gospel reveals a hardened heart worthy of God’s righteous judgment - Isaiah 5:20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; Who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!
