Elijah: His Rapture

2 Kings 2:1–18

Elijah was a man like us. God used him in a mighty way in his earthly life. God also brought him home to heaven in a miraculous way. God has the same intention for the church age saints!

  1. Elijah was a man who gave his entire life to the service of God.
    1. Elijah prayed - 1 Thessalonians 5:17 pray without ceasing
    2. Elijah did miracles - John 14:12 Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.
    3. Elijah preached - Colossians 1:28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
    4. Elijah taught - Acts 20:20 how I kept back nothing that was helpful, but proclaimed it to you, and taught you publicly and from house to house,
  1. Elijah taught and trained Elisha and other prophets - 1–7
    1. Elisha had promised to follow Elijah - 1 Kings 19:19–21
    2. A group of prophets followed Elijah.
    3. Elijah was testing Elisha to determine the extent of his commitment.
    4. The sons of the prophets were not as close to Elijah as Elisha was.
  1. Elijah and his ministry was magnified by miraculous power - 8–11
    1. The parting of the Jordan with the mantle (possibly a sheepskin) was a demonstration of the unstoppable and overcoming power of God.
      1. Moses parted the Red Sea as a sign of salvation.
      2. Joshua parted the Jordan River as a sign of victorious living.
      3. Elijah parted the Jordan River as a sign of life after death.
      4. Elisha parted the Jordan River as a sign of life conquering death.
    2. Elijah invited Elisha to ask for a blessing - 1 John 5:15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
    3. Elijah was taken up into heaven alive - 1 Corinthians 15:51

We must ask the same question Elisha did: “Where is the LORD God of Elijah?”

Brother and sister, Christ has given us a miraculous ministry and He has promised us a miraculous departure from the earth - 1 Thessalonians 4:16–17 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
