Hold Fast

Revelation 2:18–29

Corruption must be avoided. And when it can’t be avoided it must resisted.

  1. Christ’s introduction - 18
    1. The eyes of Christ penetrate any shroud of deceit and falsehood.
    2. The feet of Christ are ready to stomp out defilement and impurity.
    3. The title Son of God emphasizes His divinity and His right to judge the church.
  1. Christ’s commendation - 19
    1. The church had four commendable works:
      1. An increasing love - Jude 1:12
      2. An expanded service - Galatians 5:13
      3. A more confident faith - 2 Thessalonians 1:3–4
      4. A tougher perseverance - 2 Peter 1:5–7
    2. The church was growing in the Christian life - 2 Peter 1:8–11
  1. Christ’s rebuke - 20–23
    1. Jezebel (1 Kings 16:29-21:26) was the Phoenician wife of King Ahab. She led Ahab and Israel (northern kingdom) into Baal worship, wickedness, and the persecution of the prophets of God.
    2. “Jezebel” has come to be known as a personification of the seduction of evil.
    3. Jezebel is probably a symbolic name for a real woman who was responsible for seducing the church into immorality and false worship.
    4. Not only was her teaching false but she as a woman should not have been exercising spiritual authority in the church - 1 Timothy 2:12 And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.
    5. The Lord always grants opportunity for repentance (2 Peter 3:9).
    6. Jesus is the “heart knower” and those who tolerate Jezebel unrepentantly will show themselves to be cheating on Christ and not the children of God.
    7. The sickbed and great tribulation refer to the end time judgment. The unrepentant will miss the Rapture and will be cast into the Tribulation.
  1. Jesus’ encouragement - 24–25
    1. False teaching usually appears smart, sophisticated, and insightful. There is a contrast between the deep things of Satan and the deep things of God. - 1 Corinthians 2:10 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.
    2. The burden of Christ is light (Matthew 11:30). Simple obedience is not beyond the reach of any believer.
    3. All we need do is to hold on tight and look for Christ’s return!

Anyone can hear the words of Jesus. Believers are overcomers
