Bible Text: John 8:53-59 | Series:

Jesus is the LORD

John 8:53–59

Jesus’ claim to deity is so clear and certain that it cannot be missed. It would be a willful denial of the truth to deny that Jesus is God.

  1. According to the Holy Scriptures, who is God?
    1. God revealed Himself to Moses through His name - Exodus 3:13–15
      1. He is the one true God who is self-existent. He is always who He has always been and will always be who He always is. God says, “I AM.” We say, “HE IS.”
      2. This is God’s triune name. It is His proper name, His divine name, and His covenantal name.
    2. The LORD always reveals Himself as the God who makes promises and keeps His promises to His people - Exodus 6:1–8
      1. Verse three could be translated as a question: Did I not make Myself known as Yahweh to them?
      2. The fathers were not ignorant of His name: Genesis 2:4, 4:1, 26, 6:6–8, 8:20–21, 15:1–7
  1. According to the Holy Scriptures, who is Jesus?
    1. Who is exactly is Jesus. Is He just a prophet or teacher?
    2. Jesus declared Himself as the only Son - John 8:37–47
      1. The religious leaders claimed sonship because they were the biological descendants of Abraham.
      2. Jesus declared that sonship is more than biological. Being a true son is being obedient to one’s father.
    3. Abraham rejoiced in faith believing the covenant promises of the LORD.
    4. Jesus declared that the covenant to Abraham are fulfilled in Him - Isaiah 42:6–8 I, the LORD, have called You in righteousness, And will hold Your hand; I will keep You and give You as a covenant to the people, As a light to the Gentiles, To open blind eyes, To bring out prisoners from the prison, Those who sit in darkness from the prison house. I am the LORD, that is My name; And My glory I will not give to another
    5. The religious leaders scoff at the idea that Jesus and Abraham have anything in common. They are mocking Him.
    6. Jesus declared that He is the LORD.
      1. He is not merely saying that He existed before Abraham (I was.)
      2. The Greek wording makes it clear: He is saying, I AM. (ego eimi). The same Greek wording for LORD is found in the Septuagint.
      3. Jesus is the Son of God who is the LORD who will fulfill all the covenant promises of God!

John 8:36  Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed.
