Bible Text: Romans 1:6-17 |

Not Ashamed of the Gospel Because...

Romans 1:16–17

The book of Romans has a doctrinal purpose with an evangelistic motivation

Christians are to glorfy Christ through holy living - Doctrine

Christians are to be witnesses for Christ by preaching the gospel -  Evangelism

The Great Commission is the unifying purpose in the life of a Christian

  • Matthew 28:19–20 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.
  • Mar 16:15  And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
  • Luk 24:46–48 Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. And you are witnesses of these things.
  • Joh 20:21  So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send you."
  • Act 1:8  But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth."

This is why Spirit-filled mature Christians are always evangelizing– Preaching Good News

The Great Commission is the purpose and goal that every church activity revolves around

The goal must never just be to feed, heal, educate, or help people live better lives

The goal is to convert people!!!

The heart burden of a Christian is to make Christ known to others:

  1. 14 - Christians have a moral obligation to preach the gospel to others
  2. 15 - Christians have a deep passionto preach the gospel to others
  3. 16 - Christians have a boldness to preach the gospel to others

For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ…

The emotion of shame will betray our fears, doubts and embarrasments

Reasons not to be ashamed: “for” “bacause”

1) Because of what it does:  The gospel is the power of God to salvation

Ability from God to save souls; From sin: to transform a life; from death: hell, eternal life

Somethings don’t “work”… The gospel “works”

2) Because of who it’s for:  The gospel is for everyone; Believe that anyone can be saved!

Praying how to work the gospel in; Is this product right for this person?

3) Because of what it is: The gospel is the righteousness of God; The righteousness that belongs to God; The righteousness from God; The righteousness which God requires;

  • God’s Effective righteousness: Saving righteousness; Judging righteousness

What is righteousness?

  • Leviticus 19:35–36 - The conformity to a standard;

The Righteounsess of God is God’s conformity to His own character as the legal standard

Psa 36:6  Your righteousness is like the great mountains;

Psa 71:19  Also Your righteousness, O God, is very high, You who have done great things; O God, who is like You?

Psa 145:17  The LORD is righteous in all His ways, Gracious in all His works.

  • Job 31:6 - The obligation to another
    • Job was not suffering for his sin; he challenged his friends to find sin;
      • 7 - honest before others; 9 - wife; 13 - servants; 16 - poor; 24 - riches; 26 - idolatry; 29 - enemies; 31 - friends; 33 - society;          38 - possessions/work;

Righteousness always concerns the relationship of one to another; (not in a vacuum)

Righteousness: Meeting my ethical and legal obligation in every relationship in life;

Money; property; Job; Role; to people; “to do right by somebody”

The Righteousness of God is our legal obligation to Him

Psa 96:13  For He is coming, for He is coming to judge the earth. He shall judge the world with righteousness, And the peoples with His truth.

How does one obtain the righteousness of God? How do you meet the obligaiton?

No one can: Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God

Isa 64:6  But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags;

The righteousness of God is revealed (opened up; supernaturally made know)

The righteousness of God is in the gospel! NOT anywhere/anything/anyone else!

4) Because of how it’s received: The gospel is received by FAITH

do not need money; do not need to sign up; do not ability; EVERYONE CAN BELIEVE!!!

from faith to faith - from beginning to last; all the way through and through

Heb 11:6  But without faith it is impossible to please Him: for he that cometh to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.

What did you and I contribute to the gospel?      The sin

1Co 15:3  For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

Gal 1:4  Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:

2Co 5:21  For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Jesus did the rightousness of God; Jesus did everything; What is left for us to do? Believe

the just shall live by faith - (Hab 2:4); just (righteous) The righteous are the believers!

The righteousness of God is given freely to those who believe the gospel!

The righteousness of God is believing the gospel!
