Paul’s Chains

Acts 28:17–31

Are you chained? Paul was chained. He was a prisoner of Rome. How did Paul view his chains? How do you view your chains?

  1. Paul was unfairly placed in chains - 17–20
    1. Paul did nothing deserving of chains.
      1. The Jewish leaders admitted his innocence - Acts 23:9
      2. The Roman governor Felix deferred the charges - Acts 24:27b
      3. The Roman governor Festus took a pass - Acts 25:25
      4. King Agrippa was persuaded of his innocence - Acts 26:32
    2. Paul’s chains were the will of God - Acts 21:14 So when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, "The will of the Lord be done."
  1. Paul was in chains because of the Lord Jesus Christ - 20
    1. Paul understood his chains were for the cause of Christ - Ephesians 3:1
    2. Paul understood his chains were in the He was a prisoner not only for Christ’s sake but he was a prisoner because being united to the Lord means surrendering to His will - Ephesians 4:1
    3. Paul understood the privilege of being in Christ’s chains - Ephesians 6:20
  1. Paul preached Jesus to the Jews in Rome - 21–29
    1. The Jews in Rome not hearing of the charges against Paul was the Lord protecting Paul from further persecution from the Jews.
    2. The Jews in Rome wanted to hear about Jesus. Some believed.
    3. When the Jews in Rome rejected Jesus it fulfilled prophecy.
    4. This is recorded for us at the end of Acts to show that the salvation of God in Christ was rejected by the Jews and has been sent to the Gentiles!
  1. Paul preached Jesus to the Gentiles in Rome - 30–31
    1. There is no biblical record of Paul standing before Caesar or his death. He wrote the books of Ephesians, Colossians, Philippians, and Philemon from this first Roman imprisonment.
    2. Paul was released and continued his missionary work.
    3. The point of the abrupt ending is to emphasize that the kingdom of God and the message of the Lord Jesus Christ are unstoppable and continue to be preached today!

What chains has the Lord called you to be an ambassador in? Ephesians 6:20 for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

Brother and sister, we are never freer than when we are Christ’s prisoner and wearing His chains preaching the kingdom of God and teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ with all confidence, no one forbidding him. Acts 28:31
