Promises to the Overcomer

Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26–29

Christ makes seven promises to the seven churches. All believers are overcomers - 1 John 5:4–5 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

  1. Overcomers are promised eternal life in paradise - 2:7
    1. The tree of life will again be available to mankind - Revelation 22:1–5
    2. Jesus can grant the privilege to eat from the tree of life - John 10:27–30
    3. Eternal life is enjoyed with Jesus in His paradise - Luke 23:43 And Jesus said to him, "Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise."
  1. Overcomers are promised that they will not die eternally - 2:11
    1. The Bible never uses the term “first death.” It could be that the term second death is identifying both a chronology and category for death.
    2. The first death would then be first and temporary, and also physical.
    3. There are two resurrections - Revelation 20:4–6
      1. One resurrection to life and one to condemnation - John 5:28–29
      2. One resurrection of the just and one of the unjust - Acts 24:15
      3. One resurrection to everlasting life and one to shame and everlasting contempt - Daniel 12:2
    4. The second death is the spiritual death which is the eternal separation from God - Revelation 20:11–14
    5. Persecution may bring some injury and even physical death but the overcomer will in no way possible ever be harmed by the second death!
  1. Overcomers are promised entrance into eternal satisfaction and fulfillment - 2:17
    1. The hidden manna is Christ - John 6:35 And Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.
    2. The white stone is a reward to gain entrance to the joy and feasting in the Kingdom. The new name written on the stone is a special name signifying a special intimate relationship with Christ. This private name written on a stone represents security.
    3. The overcomers resist idolatry and compromise in favor of Christ!

Beloved, let us rest our hope fully on the promises of Jesus Christ!
