A Harmony of the Gospels

The account of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus is the saving message of God!

1 Corinthians 15:3–4 For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scripture

  1. The arrest of Jesus - John 18:1–12
    1. Jesus was arrested in the garden of Gethsemane - 1
    2. Judas betrayed Jesus - 2–3
      1. Matthew 26:48–49 Now His betrayer had given them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the One; seize Him." Immediately he went up to Jesus and said, "Greetings, Rabbi!" and kissed Him.
      2. Luke 22:48 But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?"
    3. Jesus surrendered Himself - 4–9
    4. The disciples resist His arrest - 10–11

      2. Luke 22:51 But Jesus answered and said, "Permit even this." And He touched his ear and healed him.
    5. The disciples forsake Him - Matthew 26:56

    6. Jesus is taken to Pilate the first time - John 18:28–38
      1. Jesus is accused before Pilate - Luke 23:2 And they began to accuse Him, saying, "We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to pay taxes to Caesar, saying that He Himself is Christ, a King."
    7. Jesus is taken to Herod Antipas - Luke 23:6–12
    8. Pilate tries to have Jesus released - Matthew 27:15–22; Luke 23:22 Then he said to them the third time, "Why, what evil has He done? I have found no reason for death in Him. I will therefore chastise Him and let Him go."
      1. Pilate has Jesus beaten to satisfy the Jews - John 19:1–15
    9. Jesus is sentenced to death by Pilate - John 19:16
      1. Pilate washes his hands - Matthew 27:24–26
      2. The Roman soldiers beat and mock Him - Matthew 27:26–31


  1. The death of Jesus - Luke 23:26–56
    1. Jesus is led away to be crucified - John 19:17 And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha, 
    2. Simon carried the cross of Jesus - 26
    3. Jesus appeals to the women who mourn for Him - 27–31
    4. Two criminals were crucified with Jesus - 32–33; Mark 15:28  So the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH THE TRANSGRESSORS." (Isaiah 53:12)
    5. Jesus offers forgiveness to those who crucified Him (1st saying) - 34
    6. The Jews protested the inscription - John 19:19–22
    7. The soldiers divided His garments - John 19:23–24
    8. Jesus is mocked - 35–37; Matthew 27:40–44 and saying, "You who destroy the temple and build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross." Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes and elders, said, He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.' "Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.
    9. Jesus promised eternal life to one of the robbers (2nd saying) - 39–43
    10. Jesus showed compassion for His mother (3rd saying) - John 19:25–27
    11. Jesus suffered the wrath of God (4th saying) - Matthew 27:45–47
    12. Jesus fulfilled all the prophecies of the suffering Servant (5th saying) - John 19:28–29
    13. Jesus accomplished the work of atonement (6th saying) - John 19:30
    14. Jesus entrusted Himself into the Father’s hands (7th saying) - 46
    15. The miraculous, unlikely, and ordinary witnesses to the death of Jesus (the resurrected saints did not arise at Jesus’ death but after His resurrection - Matthew 27:51, 54–56
    16. The death of Jesus was confirmed - John 19:31–37
    17. The body of Jesus was placed in a tomb - 50–56
    18. The tomb was sealed - Matthew 27:62–66
