The Triune God

Revelation 1:4–8

The book of Revelation was written by the apostle John. He sent it to seven literal, historical, local churches. The Triune God has revealed Himself to the church.

  1. The apostle John greeted the seven churches - 4a
    1. Grace is the unmerited and undeserved favor of God. He gives freely.
    2. Peace is the fulfilled satisfaction of a relationship with God.
  1. The Father is the source of grace and peace - 4b
    1. This is a Greek paraphrase for the unspeakable name of God—I AM.
    2. He is the One continually in the present, the One continually in the past, and the One continually on His way!
  1. The Holy Spirit is the source of grace and peace - 4c
    1. Only the Holy Spirit can be named equally with the Father and Son.
    2. This is imagery from the vision of Zechariah - Zechariah 4:1–10
    3. The seven lamps and eyes are the seven Spirits of Revelation - Rev 4:5; 5:6
  1. The Son is the source of grace and peace - 5–6
    1. Jesus Christ who is identified as: (these describe His future dominion)
      1. the faithful witness - He is the unchangeable fulfillment of all the promises of God (permanence).
      2. the firstborn from the dead - He the highest and chief of all the living and the heir to the eternal kingdom (position).
      3. the ruler over the kings of the earth - He will be the ultimate ruler over all the earth (power).
    2. Jesus Christ who has: (the reasons He is worthy praise)
      1. loved us - His divine love which He showed by giving His life as a sacrifice for our sins - John 15:13 Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends.
      2. washed us from our sins in His own blood - The only way for sins to be removed is through the blood atonement of Christ - Isaiah 1:18 Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.
      3. made us kings and priests to His God and Father - He personally formed and set us as royalty who offer divine service - Hebrews 12:28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 

All of the divine glory and dominion of the triune God is revealed to us in Jesus Christ!
